Required Medical Coding Books

The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Book and the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9-CM) Book are both required for preparation and testing in becoming a certified medical coder as they coincide with the medical coding course as well as the exam. These books are sold separately and can be purchased at the links provided below.

Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Book

Developed by the American Medical Association (AMA), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes are standard codes selected by HIPAA used to describe services in electronic transactions.

Developed in the 1960s, CPT has become part of the standard code set for Medicare and Medicaid claims. CPT has also been adopted by private insurance carriers and managed care companies. It is now the standard for reporting health care services in the United States.

Each year, the AMA, through its Department of CPT Editorial Research and Development, makes changes and additions to CPT. These changes correspond with significant updates in medical technology, treatment and practice. The CPT Editorial Panel meets four times a year to review proposed changes.

International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9-CM)

CBT Direct's course for Medical Coding Certification includes resources that are used by Medical Coders on the job, including the Department of Health's International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9).

ICD-9 is a book of coding guidelines compiled annually by the American Hospital Association, Healthcare Financing, National Center for Health Services and the American Health Information Management Association.

ICD-9 is recommended for use in all clinical settings but is required for reporting diagnoses and diseases to all U.S. Public Health Service and Health Care Financing Administration programs. The ICD has been revised periodically to incorporate changes in the medical field.

A related classification, the International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM), is used in assigning codes to diagnoses associated with inpatient, outpatient, and physician office utilization in the U.S. The ICD-9-CM is based on the ICD but provides for additional morbidity detail and is annually updated.

The International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, published by the World Health Organization (WHO) is the foundation of the ICD-9-CM and continues to be the classification employed in cause-of-death coding in the United States. The WHO Collaborating Center for Classification of Diseases in North America serves as liaison between the international obligations for comparable classifications and the national health data needs of the United States.
